What the app does, what it costs, and what it needs to run.
What is Gambits Edge?
Gambits Edge is a chess board scanner and AI coach for iPhone and Android. You point your phone camera at a chess board, and the app recognises the position, evaluates it with the Stockfish engine, and explains the best move in plain language. It also detects traps, flags the opponent's threats, and names the opening being played.
Can Gambits Edge scan a real physical chess board?
Yes. It reads physical boards, boards on a screen, and printed diagrams. There is no manual piece entry: the camera recognition builds the position for you.
Does Gambits Edge work offline?
Yes, fully. Board scanning and Stockfish analysis both run on your device, so the app works with no Wi-Fi and no signal. That is deliberate, because the places people most want to analyse a board are chess clubs, parks and trains.
Is Gambits Edge free?
Yes, with limits. The free tier gives you three board scans a month plus one bonus scan a day for watching an ad, and includes daily puzzles and analysis. Unlimited scanning requires Pro or a one-time scan pack.
How much does Gambits Edge Pro cost?
Pro Monthly is $3.99 a month. Pro Yearly is $29.99 a year and includes a 7-day free trial for new subscribers. Pro Lifetime is a single $79.99 payment with no recurring charge. Scan packs are also sold outright at $0.99 for 10 scans and $2.99 for 50 scans, and those credits never expire.
What chess engine does Gambits Edge use?
Stockfish. It runs on-device and provides real-time evaluation, with arrows and highlights for best moves, alternatives and threats.
Does Gambits Edge explain moves or just show evaluations?
Both. The engine gives you the evaluation, and the AI Coach explains in plain language why a move is strong, so you learn the reasoning instead of memorising a number.
Can Gambits Edge tell me which opening I am playing?
Yes. Opening recognition auto-detects the opening in play and shows the move history, so you can study the theory in the context of your actual game.
Does Gambits Edge warn me about traps?
Yes. Trap detection covers dozens of openings and flags dangerous lines in real time. Threat mode separately highlights your opponent's most dangerous plans.
How many strategies does Gambits Edge include?
Over 200 openings, traps, tactics and endgames, from the Legal Trap to the Englund Gambit, each explained and ready to study. A fresh tactical puzzle also appears every day.
Is Gambits Edge available on Android?
Yes. Gambits Edge is live on Google Play as well as the Apple App Store.
Who makes Gambits Edge?
Box of Otters, an independent app studio that also makes Block Craze, a block-blast puzzle game, and BJJ Tracker, a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training log.
